I have always supported the brave and dedicated members of our police force. They have a very difficult job in today’s society. I initially questioned the “Black Lives Matter” movement concerning its core values because many of their earlier demonstrations were themselves violent and disruptive. Having said that I do believe that there is validity for their concerns.
The police and sheriff departments should start by reviewing and revising their rules of engagement as undercover officers in plain clothes and unmarked vehicles. They should also review the regulations and expectations of off duty officers.
The incidents involving Corey Jones and Seth Adams alone should demonstrate the need for revisions. From that starting point the concerns of Black Lives Matter as it relates to the actions of off duty police officers should be reviewed as well. .
Likewise, our youth, black and white, need to have more respect for our officers in uniform. When an officer asks a person to stop or come into his view that does not give a person license to flee. When an officer asks an individual what he might have in his hands just show him. Don’t give the police officer reason for doubt by displaying suspicious conduct.
Respect for the police is the first step required for Black Lives Matter to achieve credibility and standing in a community and a review and revision of certain policies by the police need to enact.
